How to repair car if it is submerged in water or flooded

The recent floods in Chennai and across Tamil Nadu in India caused severe damages to infrastructure and affected the day to day life of millions of people. The capital of Tamil Nadu and outskirts received excessive rain falls than usual. It caused sudden flood across river paths then spread out in to the lower level places. The water level was raised up to 4 feet in many places. The tallest buildings such as residential apartments, corporate buildings and shopping complex were flooded even up to the first floor. The most of the places went to dark for a week without electricity. The belongings of people such as cars, households and furniture were completely submerged in water. The damages are unbearable to accept though people needs some awareness to safeguard their belongings after the incident.

Here, we are going to see how to fix the car engine, if it is submerged completely in water or flooded:

1. Determine how much deep the car is submerged in water.

2. Do not attempt yourself to pull out the car from water when the car is floating or fully submerged. Let the water drain from the area first. If the water has not drained within couple of days then use professional towing service to pull out the car from water and then take it to authorized service center or carriage. It is advised to get the help of mechanic.

3. Before towing your car, look around the the car’s tires, brakes and rims to find whether any debris is lodged inside or not. Inspect the brake pads, disks and brake lines thoroughly before moving your car further. There is always less possibility of good condition of brake system if the war was under water. The brake fluid could easily get contaminated by the flooded water.

4. Dry your car dash board, floors mats, doors panels and seats. Use sponge to absorb the water from floor and below seats. If there is excessive water in floors use cups to get the water out.

5. Check fluid level of Power steering, Break fluid, Coolant water and Engine oil. You can easily find out the water inside the engine using dip stick of engine. If the oil level is increased than usual level, you can confirm that there is some water is inside the engine. Sometimes you can spot the water dew on dip stick. Even if there is no sign of dew in dip stick you must do the process to protect your vehicle, if it is immersed in water.

6. Do not start the engine immediately after pulling out from the water or when the water is drained from the area. Switching on the engine will cause severe damage to engine.

7. Inspect the radiator fan functionality as there can be chance of garbage from water is sticking on blades.

8. Drain the existing old engine oil completely from engine.

9. Clean engine intake manifold, starter motor and all water entries.

10. Check the battery to know whether it has charge or not.

11. Flush out the old coolant from radiator completely then replace with new coolant. Remember if it is green color use the same color coolant. If it is pink color use pink color coolant with appropriate mixture of distilled water.

12. Cleaning the petrol tank is necessary because contaminated petrol will harm engine.

13. Replace Air filter, Spark Plugs and Oil filter. If the air filter is wet, the water can get inside the engine through throttle body. You have to remove the air filter.

14. Fill new engine oil and replace with new engine oil filter. Never start the engine till the entire process is completed.

15. Jack the front wheels of the car then rotate the rear wheels by hand without switching on the car. This will enable the circulation of oil inside the engine and the oil gets mixed with water. The cranking of engine is required to blow out the water. Before you crank the engine manually, you must remove all spark plugs. Rotate for at least 15 minutes and then drain out the engine oil completely.

16. Then, second time fill with new engine oil and do the same process again then drain the engine oil.

17. Finally, third time fill new engine oil and make sure that new spare parts such as spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter and engine oil filter are properly placed.

18. Now, switch on engine then run idle for 2 minutes. Then check engine oil level through dip stick to know whether more oil is required. Refer your car owners’ manual to know the engine oil levels. It is better to clean all electrical plugs and check electrical lines before starting the engine. It may be tempting to start the engine immediately after process. Please do not.

19. Wash car under chassis using highly pressurized water because mud from sudden flood should can fill the gaps of parts.

20. Lubricate the bearings, brake caliper using high temperature sustainable grease because those areas were completely washed away by water.

The given process will help you to avoid major problems and spending lesser money to avoid major injury to the car engine. It is advised to seek the help of mechanic from authorized service station with precaution measures. Please consult your insurance company first for what to do next in case the car seems damaged beyond the limit. It is better to contact the insurance company through service center or directly before towing the car or taking any further steps after flooding. You must know your insurance policy rules and regulation for claiming loss.

The additional precaution tips are given here below to avoid any damages during the rainy season or when the flood warning is given by the forecast department:

1. Switch off your air condition while driving in water. Do not drive the car when water level is reached up to the exhaust outlet. Stop immediately at elevated places. If you experience heavy water is coming inside the car immediately exit yourself from car to reach the safest place.

2. People who live in flood prone areas have to park their car in elevated place during rainy season.

3. Do not start the engine if the car is immersed in the water above the tire level.
